Why Does Ya Have A Strong Dislike Towards Natural Cures?
1. Because too many opened minded people are afraid to speak, out of fear of low ratings and false reports
2. YA works with the FDA, and rather see them make money than people go through painless cures and treatments.
3. Fear of the unordinary
I don’t know if any of your listed possibilities hit the nail on the head. I believe very strongly in doing everything I can to maintain good health – I don’t depend on the doc every time I have a sniffle. And I don’t care what my YA ratings are – that’s not why I answer so few questions.
I don’t answer many because many of the questions are looking for unreasonable solutions. Some people want quick fixes and instant cures. It doesn’t work that way, for medicine or natural methods. Only the body can ‘cure’ itself, whether through meds, natural, or healthy lifestyle. Too many people want to keep living their life of convenience and then make symptoms go away, not bothering to find out what the cause of the symptoms really are (often related to lifestyle choices). Responsible believers in natural methods (that’s natural METHODS, not natural cures) don’t want to risk the asker’s health by trying to ‘cure’ a problem that’s not diagnosed, just as a doctor doesn’t give out perscriptions without asking a bunch of questions first.
Another problem is the pharma companies pushing to make ppl think they can’t survive without medical intervention. Naysayers, like those who depend on sites that supposedly report quack treatment methods, often quack the loudest thereby gaining more attention than those who quietly go about their business of helping others. There is a lot more money at stake for pharm companies than natural methods. Oh, and did I mention control? If we get smart about taking care of ourselves a little better then the govt wouldn’t have as much info on us (through medical files) and we wouldn’t be so dependent on our benevolent big brothers. (pharmas, insurance, drugs, etc). That would cost them all money.
Another downside is that what works for one person doesn’t work for another – in both natural and medical treatments. Whey do we need several different types of statin drugs? Anti-depressants? Antibiotics? Pain killers? Because what works for one person doesn’t necessarily address the cause of another’s problem, even though the symptoms are the same. Nobody seems to mind when a doc gives a perscription, it doesn’t work, he changes dosage or brand and continues the cycle until something works. For the responder who claims doctors know exactly what to give for an ailment, I say ‘hockey-puck!!’. Well, it’s the same for the natural methods of improving health. Glucosomine works for many for joint pain, but not everyone. The only difference is that I’m responsible for my own research instead of dependong on someone else to do the ‘hit-and-miss’ for me.
Natural methods is a mindset and somewhat of a lifestyle, not a pill to pop to make us feel better right now. It’s best used with a healthy attitude towards the medical community. I don’t run to the doc at first symptom, but I certainly don’t shun medical science.
Probably because these natural cures don’t actually cure anything. I personally don’t care if you live a gullible life in general. But when people on here give advice to others on how to treat an illness, it needs to be real. Its just too dangerous to think that people aren’t getting the real treatment they need because they choose to use some bogus therapy they heard about on YA. It’s just wishful thinking that causes people to believe they can cure themselves by making rediculous homemade remedies. Everyone wants to be a doctor. The fact is, real medicine is complicated and precise. It requires the careful recommendations of real Medical Doctors who calculate exactly what a medication will do to you. They know exactly what will happen to your body when you put something in it. These “natural cures” were almost always invented by someone with no scientific or medical background at all. Here’s how natural cures come about… Someone has a headache, they drink lemonade, the headache eventually goes away. They think the lemonade cured them and they tell everyone they know to drink lemonade to “cure” headaches. They believe in it so much that the placebo effect is pretty strong. Whenever the lemonade doesn’t work, they make an excuse (but keep in mind that all headaches eventually go away). At no point is there ever a scientific basis for it. They are never able to propose a mechanism of action, or make calculated predictions about treatment. Almost all studies done on these “natural cures” yield no positive results. If they did, drug companies would make a synthetic version of the exact same molecule. Do you have any idea how many “drugs” came from plants? The ones that don’t turn out to be anything of value are somehow still raved about by uneducated people who want to cure themselves with mother nature. They are the same people that are prone to conspiracy theories about drug companies, government, and medical doctors. All of it has little basis, but if it makes you feel smart…fine.
I apologize if that rant seems like I’m attacking you personally. Let me take a deep breathe and try to sum it up. Basically, medicine needs to be based on facts, evidence, science, etc. It is not something that people should “believe in” like a religion. Especially because these natural remedies have already been disproven. Despite what you want to believe about your “evil” medical doctors, they don’t get paid to write prescriptions. They write presciptions because they are based on sound science that has proven its relative safety and efficacy. It is simply inappropriate for a doctor to treat someone with something that isn’t backed by science.
EDIT: Repto – congrats, you’re not completely irrational…just sometimes. Personally, I’m not taking any prescription meds, and I haven’t been to the doctor in like 4 years. I also agree that people need to take control of their health by looking at their lifestyle choices. Those are all very rational points of view. But I disagree with you on so many fundamental points of view. First of all, you said pharma companies make people think they can’t live without medical intervention…as if the makers of MonaVie and magnet bracelets aren’t using the “hard sell” on you. At least pharma ads are factual and the products are effective.
Also, I can’t believe you said that “naysayers” like me are the ones that get all the attention and “quack” the loudest. For every response of mine, there are a dozen people posting how much they love some quack remedy. And that’s just on this board. In person, I keep to myself because us “naysayers” just come across as arrogant jerks. It always the room full of “believers” talking about some bogus treament and me quietly keeping to myself. That’s why quack treatments are so widespread.
At the end of your response, you grouped natural and conventional meds into the same bucket by claiming that they all work differently in different people. That is just clouding the truth. The variation in efficacy is very slim in conventional drugs compared to these natural remedies that probably don’t work at all. Yes, you might respond to one drug better than another, but it’s not because the “cause” of your problem is different. It’s because of slight variations in your liver enzymes. And doctors know which enzymes breakdown which drugs, therefore if Drug A didn’t work, they might try Drug B if it has a different mechanism of action or is metabolized differently. The difference is that they are still making highly educated decisions. They aren’t just playing random “hit and miss”. The natural treatments you “try” on yourself are not educated or scientific decisions at all. And I really want to have a discussion with you about your obvious “big brother” conspiracy theories, but I’ll leave that for another time. But again, I’ll point out that there is nothing that would prevent a drug company from taking your “natural” method and purifying it and making it into a convenient little pill…if it worked.
I’m quite certain after the past few months on here that there are paid shills on YA, esp. in this section. many of them have backed off lately though. But the campaign against natural medicine is all about money.
Even Harvard says Acupuncture is real. The debate is OVER.

I have a beautiful 19 month old daughter & I am interested in integrating her health care with a holistic provider as well as keeping her traditional “western medicine” pediatrician. Whenever I inquire about it here on Y/A I always get the same “your crazy what are you doing to your daughter!?” type answers. It’s frusterating how ignorant ome people can be about accepting alternative treatments
As does most of the medical community. Until someone shows Solid, Concrete Proof of natural cures, the world is not gonna accept it.
I don’t know but look out, Herbert is right behind you
I find eating a lot of bran and fruits and vegetables will keep you in tip top shape almost always
