What Herbs Do I Need To Start A Wiccan Herb Garden?

July 19, 2009

I’m a young witch and I want to start a herb garden, so I don’t have to go out and buy them.
I just want to know what are the necessary herbs, you know, ones I’d be using a lot of spells.
I don’t mind the cost, as long as I can find them in my local garden centres.

I would recommend sage for smudge sticks, wisdom and healing. rosemary and thyme are good for purification and protection spells, basil for creativity, balance. These are all good all round cooking herbs too.

Herbs don’t have religions, but speaking as a Wiccan I get more out of growing my local indigenes than anything else.
Of course, you said centres, so if you’re in Ontario (or as I call it, down the street…literally, 500 yards) then they are the same.
If, however, you’re in the uk or australia, my Monarda and Echinaceas would be the worst!

I would suggest starting with rosemary, either a bush or a pot at your front door, for protection and purification. Next add some lavendar – experiment with a few different kinds to get one you like (I like English but most people prefer French). I think it’s better to get one plant at a time and get super familiar and close to it before getting the next. When I first started, I went berzerk buying live and dried herbs just because I might need them someday, and most went unused. Take your time – “there’s always time for thyme” lol ;) Hugs and bright blessings! ~MorningStar
