If you are a registered nurse, you already hold the key to unlock an almost unlimited number of career opportunities. The only thing you have to do is choose the door to walk through. There is little risk here, if you feel like you have traveled down the wrong path you can simply choose another door. This is what it’s like to obtain advanced nursing certifications. You have the ability to choose a career path that suites you, but you can always gain additional certifications and change your career track.
With a nursing certification there is no limit to the things you can do throughout your career. There are many new and emerging nursing fields popping up all the time. Obtaining certification in areas such as forensic nursing, holistic nursing and genetic nursing will you allow to work in these nontraditional fields. Most of the certifications do not take a long time to obtain, so you can gain as many as you feel necessary.
Obtaining nursing certifications can easily help you advance from a registered nurse into a number of different leadership roles. Although the most common is nursing supervisor, you may gain certifications in specialties such as nurse manager or nurse administrator. These specialties help you land positions in the operational and financial management sectors within the healthcare industry. You may only be working at the hospital, but you could become one of the key leaders that ensure that the hospital runs efficiently and effectively.
When you obtain advanced nursing certifications you give yourself the opportunity to break out of the hospital and into many different types of organizations. Advanced certifications allow you to work in environments that a regular registered nurse may not be able to. For example, with fields like genetic nursing and nurse researcher, you are able to work in a laboratory setting. With specialties like legal nurse consulting, and nurse advocacy you might even find yourself in the courtroom. With ethics in nursing and nurse educator you are sure to be in the classroom.
Not only can you find yourself working in multiple types of organizations during the course of your career, but with some nursing certifications your nursing career may even be able to take you to different states or countries. International nursing gives you the tool to take your nursing knowledge to a variety of different countries. Right now, this is one of the more popular specialties, and though most choose to take their expertise to an underdeveloped nation, you can choose to go where ever you would like, as nurses are in demand all over the world.
Choosing an advanced certification such as independent nurse consulting could give you the option of starting your own business. You can choose to start a consulting business, a mobile or in home nursing business, or maybe even a case management business. The possibilities are endless. Along with the consistent boom in medical services that is forecasted to last for years to come, your chance of turning a profit sooner and staying in business longer is greater than that of the average first time entrepreneur. As the largest group of people in the country (the “baby boomers”) begins to age, the need for healthcare workers and businesses will continue to grow.
Becoming certified within a particular specialty will allow you to explore other career interests, possibly writing. A number of nurses lend their knowledge to various media outlets and organizations through either full time or part time writing. Regardless of whether you choose the specialty of nurse writing or you choose to write about other medical procedures, you will find the opportunities endless, possibly allowing you to cultivate this knowledge into a career. Aside from writing articles you may choose to write for seminars, continuing education course materials, or even product reviews.
Nursing certifications allow you to expand your career by giving you options. As you can see there is no limit to the number of career paths that you can take. You can manage your career to change as you change. In this economy some may see career longevity as a great reason for gaining nursing certifications. Many nurses see the flexibility of obtaining these additional credentials as their greatest asset. You should be able to obtain certifications while still working full time. Your certifications can help you move from the hectic pace and schedule of a registered nurse to the more structured business hours and standard schedule of a consultant. Then there is the consistent demand of specialty nurses. Unlike most of those entering the workforce today, you should be able to get a job anywhere in the U.S.
Nursing certifications not only expand your career, but they give you the control of turning your career into whatever you would like it to be. Certifications such as these allow you to take your favorite part of your job and perform that service possibly for the rest of your career.

First, let’s get the pronunciation right, it is pronounced eh-kin-AY-sha. The echinacea herb is very important to grow in your herb garden for use in herbal medicine. By adding the echinacea herb to your herb garden not only will you be able to use it in your herbal medicine regime but you also gain a beautiful flowering herb.
It is mostly found in the Northern Plains and has been used by Native Americans for its healing power in herbal medicine. The Indians used the mashed roots on everything from wounds to snakebites. It was used as a mouthwash to help with painful teeth and gums. They brewed Echinacea herbs as teas for colds and other maladies, like measles and arthritis. The Indians prized this herb for its value in herbal medicine. They thought that the echinacea herb was a blood purifier.
As herbal medicine, the echinacea herb is useful in all its parts. It is a daisy like flower with a rich purple hue. This herb will outshine any other flowers in your herb garden. Monarch Butterflies will flock to your herb garden when you have included the Echinacea herb. The best time to dig up the plant is in the fall but be aware that it takes three years for the herb to be useful in herbal medicine.
In the later part of the 1990’s there were scads of studies that showed the usefulness of the echinacea herb for colds and flu. But there have also been studies that claim it as worthless. You will have to try it to see how it affects you.
The echinacea herb is a stimulant for the immune system. The herb boosts the ability of macrophages (infection fighting white blood cells) to fight off invading germs. When taking the echinacea herb as part of your herbal medicine regime, infections cased by viruses, bacteria and fungus will heal much faster than without it.
Typically the root is used in herbal medicine. If you eat the fresh root, you should get a numbing or tingling of the tongue. It will also increase the flow of saliva in your mouth. This is entirely normal and should cease in about 15 minutes. The echinacea herb is best used in its fresh state. So you see echinacea is important to add to your herb garden. When you plant echinacea in your herb garden you will be adding one more natural plant to use in your arsenal of herbal medicine.
With the echinacea herb the most commonly used in herbal medicine is the E. augustifolia. However, E. purpurea and E; pallida can be just as useful in herbal medicine if prepared correctly.
Another way to get the benefits from the echinacea herb is to make a tincture, (look for my article on How To Make Tinctures). In a glass of fruit juice add up to 30 drops in the juice and take it three times a day. Adjust the dosage if you become nauseas. And, as in all things in life, you can get “to much of a good thing”. If you take the echinacea herb over too long a period of time, you will over stimulate your immune system. So, take a break when your symptoms start to dissipate.
There are some people that should not use echinacea in their herbal medicine routine. No one with auto-immune disease should take the herb since it could potentially aggravate that disease. And people with HIV should not take echinacea because by stimulating the immune system you may also stimulate the virus. It is most important to always check with your doctor before starting any herbal medicine regime.

For more and more people for whom traditional medicine has not produced the desired results or for those who consciously select to follow complementary and alternative medicine practices in comparison to traditional health ones, alternative remedies have come to the rescue. In fact, according to multiple studies, an outstanding one in three of all adults in the US (34%) has used some kind of complementary / alternative therapy in the past year.
For the other two individuals who have not decided yet to try any therapy that belongs to this type of health practice, or are not sure if they have done so in the past, it is important to understanding what complementary and alternative therapy is and why people select to use it.
According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), complementary and alternative medicine is defined as “a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine.” But although these types of alternative practices are not taught in medical schools or implemented by certified physicians, the highest use of complementary and alternative medicine was reported by people between 25 and 49 years of age who had relatively more education and higher incomes.
Even more overwhelming is the fact that the vast majority (83%) of those who have used one or more unconventional therapy methods for serious medical conditions also sought treatment for the same health problems from a medical doctor although 72 percent of the survey respondents did not inform their medical doctors that they had done so. Why are people afraid to admit the obvious? Is in fact complementary and alternative medicine a “sin?”
The underlying philosophy of these approaches greatly differs from conventional medicine. In general, complementary and alternative therapies are based on the body’s innate ability to heal itself. By using natural methods instead of complicated conventional medical procedures, alternative health practitioners provide their healing services to those who seek to explore an unconventional therapy in addition to whatever their medical doctors have subscribed, advised or performed.
Moreover, since complementary and alternative medicine’s goal is to create optimum health, it focuses on preventing disease and helping someone feel better overall. In fact, it looks at the underlying cause of the problem and addresses the issue at hand from every perspective and not just by examining the symptoms of ill health. The most well-known healing therapies belonging to the complementary and alternative medicine practice are: chiropractic, aromatherapy, massage, mind-body therapies such as deep breathing exercises and meditation, energy therapies, Yoga, traditional Chinese medicine and practices, like the age-old practice of acupuncture, homeopathy and diet therapies based on the use of herbs and nutritional supplements.
If you have never tried complementary and alternative medicine, maybe it’s not such a bad idea to indulge yourself with a massage session or keep your dietary habits in control. Simple practices will let you enjoy a precious healthy status for years to come.
