Tips On How To Survive Nursing School

By , September 19, 2009

Nursing school is both, an exhilarating as well as a demanding experience. It is not very difficult, but not very easy too; it has its own set of stress levels, which you have to deal with. At times, you may feel depressed and might think about how you would survive nursing school. Well, there are a few guidelines that are discussed in this article, to help you overcome the pressure levels of nursing school and how to cope up with it.

How would you survive the examinations that are conducted in nursing school?

Well, it is not all that complicated. Each student has an individual kind of studying pattern and manner. No matter what your approach is, make it a point to allocate a sufficient amount of time to get yourself ready for the test. Cramming by no means is a good thing to do, since it simply enhances the level of pressure and would most probably bring about withholding of information. Try and keep all distractions at bay. Try to come out of your home or your dormitory and look out for a calm place where you can sit down and study peacefully. Take sufficient rest prior to the day of the exam. Be alert and read and follow all the instructions on the examination. Walk up to your teacher, if you require some kind of explanation on any of the questions.

How would you survive nursing schools by taking assistance from other people?

Try to get a hold of someone you can study with or create a study group. Considering the load of information that you are required to study, working along with fellow students for an examination, any kind of project or assignment would be extremely useful. You could even share notes with one another and cross-examine one another as well. In addition, you could teach a friend a topic that he or she is facing some kind of problem with and vice versa. If you are really very serious about your studies, make it a point to choose study partners who compliment your dedication.

How would you survive nursing school by making use of different resources?

There are a few essentials like books on nursing, medical journals as well as articles that need to be considered. There are a lot of topics that will be completed in class. However, you could complement this with your very own investigation and study. There are a lot of resources meant for nursing students that can be found on the Internet, where you are able to receive complete information and additional study assistance.

In addition, you could sign up for online forums meant for nursing students to intermingle with other students. Getting in touch with new friends and being a part of a community are definitely beneficial while dealing with the pressure of studies.

How would you survive nursing school when you have certain responsibilities like being engaged in a job and looking after a family?

You have to be organized. You are required to gain knowledge and yet, lay down your priorities and make up your mind regarding your investment in time. Chart out your actions cautiously, taking into consideration your responsibilities of being engaged in a job and looking after a family. For example, you could design your study schedule once the kids are fast asleep or when they are in school. As a result you would be able to pay more attention to them when they are with you.

Overview of Nursing School Programs

By , September 15, 2009

If you are interested in obtaining a degree in nursing, you could not have picked a better time. Nurses are in great demand today, and with people living longer, that demand is likely to increase in the coming years. Nursing school programs can be characterized by the type of degree they offer, and although there are actually 5 degree types that one can obtain as a nurse, the more popular degrees are the Associate’s and the bachelor’s. However, if you are interested in newer professions such as forensic nursing, there are also certificate programs. Maybe you are considering legal consultation or teaching and you may even decide to get your master’s degree. The other defining characteristic is whether you are in an online or distance learning program, or taking courses at a traditional college or university.

The Associate’s degree programs focus predominately on teaching students what is needed to prepare them to enter the workforce with the skills of a professional nurse. Their education typically has four major components, which consist of evaluation of care, health teaching, wellness and prevention, and the administration of treatments and medications. The evaluation component includes observation, nursing diagnosis, assessment, and intervention. The main focus of the Associate’s degree is for their student to achieve employment either while in school or directly after graduation.

Although it is not a requirement, most nursing programs for a bachelor’s degree operate from the assumption that most of their students are registered nurses and/or they have already obtained their Associate’s degree in nursing. The focus of these programs is to prepare students for a higher position, such as a supervisory role, or to enter into a master’s degree program. These programs usually revolve around the cultural, political, economic and social issues that can affect patients and the health care industry in general. There is also a focus on understanding the allocation and management of resources, which includes but is not limited to, people, money, and time. The most common variations of the Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or a student’s route to this degree include going from an RN to a bachelor’s degree. Other variations include the accelerated bachelor’s program, LPN to a bachelor’s, the traditional 4-year bachelor’s, the online RN – bachelor’s degree, and the second-degree bachelor’s program.

The master’s degree program revolves around the type of career you want, as you can get a master’s degree that focuses on a more specific nursing path such as, Nursing, Nurse Education, Midwifery, Administration, and Health Care Systems Management. If your focus revolves around Nursing, Nursing Education, Midwifery, or any other similar specialty, your training should focus more on the actual health and expanding upon the knowledge received in your previous educational programs. If you have decided on receiving a masters degree with a focus on Leadership in Healthcare Systems, Nursing Administration, Health Care Systems Management, or any other similar specialty, your program should focus on management, leadership, finance, managed care strategies, workforce management, and other courses designed to prepare students for obtaining leadership positions in their chosen health care organization.

It is important to note that in the field of nursing many programs often offer certificates as well degree programs. The certificate programs are more specialized than degree programs and there are certificates that can be obtained before you receive a bachelor’s degree or after you gain your master’s degree. Some of the certificate programs that are pre-master’s degree include case management and geriatric care management. A few certificates for those with a master’s degree include legal nurse consulting and life care planning.

Most online schools and traditional colleges and universities also offer more specialized programs like the Nurse Practitioner program and Clinical Nursing Specialist programs. As other nursing careers and specialties gain popularity, you should begin seeing more degree and/or certificate programs available in the field of Nursing.

Unlike online programs, colleges and universities can boast a combination of classroom training, lab work, and on the job experience as a part of their programs. Although this has been the greatest advantage of traditional schooling, some online programs are starting to catch up, especially the distance learning programs. One of the greatest selling points of distance learning offered by traditional colleges and/or universities is the ability to graduate or “walk” with their traditional program peers. Yet, the main draw of complete online programs is the ability to gain a degree on your own time that works with your schedule while allowing you to work a full time job.

Take your time and financial situation into account before settling in on a program. Regardless of the certificate or degree program that you choose, be sure that you pick a program that is good for you. There are many options available in the field of nursing and this information can help you find the correct path to the degree that you are seeking.

What you Need to Think of When Looking for an Online Nursing School

By , August 29, 2009

Nursing now presents a very good career field. If you are interested in becoming a nurse there are many opportunities for you to choose from. You could work in a hospital, a doctor’s office or even travel around the world with your nursing skills. There is currently a high demand for nursing jobs therefore many training programs are available including online nursing degree programs. With online nursing degree programs you can earn a nursing degree regardless of where you live. The other benefit of an online program is you can learn at your own pace.

Now that there are so many online nursing programs you really need to do your research to decide which online nursing school you should choose. That’s what this article is about. This article gives you information on the things that you need to think about when you are choosing an online nursing school.

The first thing you need to do is make sure that the school is accredited. When a school is accredited it means that the school has met or exceeded nationally recognized standards in teaching. Accreditation of online nursing schools is not a requirement, that is why you need to be sure to check and make sure that whatever school you are interested in is accredited. This is important because employers like to higher nurses who have gotten their qualifications from an accredited school. In addition to your job search any credits that you get from an accredited online school should be transferable and this is not possible when you go to a school that has not been accredited.

Another thing to think about is how many students each teacher will be responsible for. To check on this just contact the Admissions department to see what the average student to teacher ratio is. This is important to consider because you want to make sure that the teacher does not have too many students that they will not be able to give your personal attention.

In order to become a licensed registered nurse in the United States you will need to pass an exam called the National Council Licenser Examination-Registered Nurse or NCLEX-RN for short. Therefore you want to make sure that you know what percentage of students graduating from the online school you are interested in actually pass this exam. This will give you a good idea as to how thoroughly this online school will prepare you for the examination. This is critical because if you do not pass the exam you cannot become a registered nurse.

The other thing you need to check into is if the school will require clinical assignments. If they do require a clinical assignment in a hospital you need to have transportation to get to these clinical assignments. If transportation is an issue or if other things in your life make it difficult to do a clinical assignment then you need to be able to work with the school to complete this requirement.

The best way to make a decision about an online nursing school is to be very familiar with every detail of what the requirements will be. The last thing you want to do is start this process and not be able to finish it due to something that you overlooked while researching for an online school.

Are You Too Old To Go To Nursing School?

By , August 11, 2009

I turned forty the month I graduated from nursing school. It is a different experience going to college at a later point in life than in your twenties, however, it is never too late to learn something new. Many people decide to go back to school at a later point in life to finish up a Masters Degree or to change careers. If you are looking to start a second career, nursing offers good employment, many different schedules and a chance to help people at the same time.

Nursing is a well respected profession. You will be working with people and their families and helping them deal with and recover from accidents and illnesses. You will be critically appraising the situation and solving problems independently and with the doctors.

Classes needed to become a nurse include biology, chemistry, general education as well as the nursing process. These classes will help you understand the workings of the human body, disease process and your future patients. You will also participate in clinicals, basically working in a hospital supervised by a nurse instructor.

There are a lot of nursing programs. Some are Associate Degree programs and others are at the Bachelor level. It is important to research the program that fits your needs. Things to consider as an older nursing student:

* The length of the program

* How many students that enroll pass and complete the program

* How many students pass the boards and receive their license

* Does the school offer daycare

* The cost of the nursing program — they vary wildly

There are a lot of nursing scholarships available. You can also apply for federal financial aid, loans and grants from the government. I was able to to get a local hospital to pay $4000 toward the cost of nursing school by agreeing to work for them upon graduation for a certain amount of time depending on the amount of money I received. Checking with the human resources department at local hospitals may be the way to secure money for nursing school. Also, there are often programs set up through the city where you are able to receive some assistance while going through school. These programs have a wide range of help available from full tuition, books, uniforms and even help with living expenses. You may want to work part time while attending school, but you may have to make a hard decision along the way about which is more important: finishing school or keeping your job.

Upon successfully completing nursing school your will have to sit and pass the NCLEX, a licensing exam, before you can work as a nurse. Warning: check with the college and your state board of nursing to make sure you can be a nurse. If you have a criminal record you may, not necessarily, be unable to receive a nursing license, but it is a could idea to confirm with state board before you spend a lot of money and time on a nursing program.

A lot of people decide to change their career to nursing because of the money you can make. There is nothing wrong with this, but you need to understand two things. First, nursing is hard work and you will be earning every penny. Second, you must provide excellent care regardless of your motivation. You will be taking care of people’s sons and daughters, wives and husbands. To succeed, you must be willing to put the patient’s needs first because you are in a health care profession where carelessness or laziness could mean the difference between life and death.

One of the great advantages of becoming a nurse is that full time is often three days a week. Those are three twelve hour shifts which permits you to have a four day weekend. This allows you the opportunity to spend more time with your children and grandchildren, travel or even pick up extra work at your own hospital or through an agency that sends nurses to many different areas.

Whether you become a nurse is entirely up to you. If you are unhappy with your current situation, just need a change or you feel like a challenge, nursing may be right for you. Changing careers later in life is always difficult, but it is more desirable than unemployment or a dead-end job you hate. If you really want to become a nurse, you will be able to overcome the challenges.

How To Choose A Good Online Nursing School Program

By , August 8, 2009

Once you decide on going ahead with nursing as your chosen profession, then you must select a good nursing program. If you prefer the online nursing degree program from the several available nursing program options then you need to consider various essentials before doing so, as this is an important step towards becoming a nurse. Once you choose the right nursing school program, it is like winning half the battle.

Online nursing school benefits

There are many benefits if you opt for online nursing school programs, according to your convenience and choice. Before selecting a program, you must carefully analyze how much time you would be able to give your studies. Then you should judge the viability of the option that you have selected and how it would help you to get a job and the perks you would gain. This is essential for creating an interest in this field.

Students largely opt for online nursing school programs over the traditional schools because they feel that this preference is less expensive as compared to the traditional method. An online nursing program also provides lot of flexibility and that is the reason why it attracts more students. If you have made your choice of pursuing an online nursing program over the traditional ones, then you must calmly and carefully consider all the factors attached to it so that you don’t regret in the future.

. First, check out the fees as well as the courses offered by online nursing schools. It is very important to choose the best course; one with reasonable pricing. Online nursing schools sometimes ask for up front fees. They feel that it is important that new recruits know about the fee structure they are required to pay for the course.

. Check the course structure before signing up for any program. Each school offers a different syllabus and hence, compare it with other online nursing programs. Check for all the necessary requirements in the prerequisite area of the course description.

. While selecting an online nursing program please don’t forget to check the duration of the specified program. Most of the schools that offer online programs operate on the same premises as the traditional schools and hence it is a prerequisite that students complete a minimum number of hours in the class to be eligible to graduate.

. Conduct research and find out about the degrees offered and if the online program offers a degree program. Most of the online nursing schools choose to give you the freedom to select the type of degree you wish to obtain.

. Finally you should understand that if you select the best online nursing program, then the journey towards the career will be much easier and smoother and if you have some special need then you should check it out with your online school advisor, to ensure that it can be accommodated.
