I’m Interested In Becoming A Nurse, Preferably In A “natural/holistic Setting & Not Sure How To Go About This.

July 26, 2009

I already have a 4-year degree in history (not sure if that even matters) and I’m looking to change from my exciting middle-management career to nursing. With the economy like it is I would be happy to get work anywhere but I really want to work with people who treat patients holisticly. Are there nursing schools that prepare you for this type of work? Do I have to be an RN first and then take extra classes? Are people even looking for this type of nurse?

San francisco state university has to my knowledge the only accredited holistic health program in the US, and a nursing program which accepts taking HH classes for part of the degree.
Might be a place to look, alternatively I’d consider getting in touch with one of the main naturopathic colleges (bastyr, southwestern, national college of naturopathic medicine), and see if they have any options for you to pursue.

There is usually a demand for nurses. Yes you do need to go to nursing school to become a nurse. I would check with your nearest community college or university. Most community colleges have a nursing program to become and RN usually takes two years but since you already have a degree, at least you will not have to repeat the basic courses so it could go faster.
After RN with the associates degree they have a BSN which is a bachelor’s degree. Depending on the reqirements of the university and what your existing bachelor’s degree is in, you may even be able to get the BSN in 2 years. I would strongly advise finding out what colleges and universities in your area offer these programs and talking to someone about it.
