My dad has emphesyma. I have been praying for him, and I have told him to drink more pure water, but I need to know if there are any vitamins that he can take that could help his lungs get better?

Emphysema (COPD–Chronic obstructive lung disease) is by definitions a destruction of the alveolar capillary membrane and a loss of elasticity. There is no fix for the damage already. You need to prevent them from getting worse. If he has not quit smoking, he should. He should be taking his medication as prescribed. Frequently, they take an anticholingergic such as atrovent or spiriva, a broncodilator such as albuterol and an inhaled steroid such as pulmicort or flovent. Many take a combination drug of a bronchodilator and a steroid such as Advair 250. When it comes to steroids, he such rinse his mouth after taking it. Make sure a respiratory therapist or a nurse teaches him correct procedure to use and inhaler/puffer or nebulizer. There is an art to getting the most of the drug in the lungs and not in the back of the mouth.
Research shows that exercises and pulmonary rehab are beneficial to people with COPD. Meet with a dietitian to discuss a proper diet.
He should also receive a pneumonia shot and a yearly flu shot. His doctor should be following the GOLD guidelines.
Drinking water is ok as long as he is not in congestive heart failure/ cor pulmonale. So if he retaining water, he should be on fluid restrictions.

Yep, everything Mary said is correct. However the medication mentioned depend on where you live. In the UK the common drugs are exactly the same but have different names.
Here are some: Salbutamol, Atrovent if not a smoker, Spivra or Tiotropium if he is a smoker, Prednisolone steroids, Beclaforte or similar inhaler, serivent inhaler, salbutamol &/or atrovent nebuliser and home oxygen.
There is no cure for emphysema unfortunately, but with proper care and the right medication the disease can be managed.
    Good luck.
