Are You Tired Of These “natural” Cures For Depression And Anxiety?
I have this pet peeve. I am all for natural cures normally, but I am tired of people feeling that this is the number one way to go. For example, St. John’s wort…..people think that if you take it that it will be better because it has no side effects. Well it does, and it isn’t regulated anyways, so you have to be very careful. Also the science debates its merits! Anti-depressants and natural cures can work together, and I don’t think one is better than the other, it all depends on the person. What do you think?
I don’t pay attention to them personally but they concern me because there are probably a lot of people who need therapy & medication who aren’t getting it because of these types of ads.
Like you, I’m always keen to try ‘natural’ remedies first – but I do get very frustrated with people who insist these work the best for depression! Maybe for some people they do, but I tried three, and they didn’t help.
For severe, ongoing depression and anxiety, there’s nothing wrong with trying medication. But people tend to be so critical of this choice – and many of these people have never actually suffered depression themselves so frankly have no idea what they’re talking about!
Re St Jonn’s Wort: I tried it and it did absolutely nothing. You can’t take it if you’re also taking anti depressants, and it also interferes with the Pill and many other medications.

I am a survivor of depression and have overcome it completely, so maybe I’m qualified to answer this question. First of all, I wholeheartedly agree with you statement concerning St. Johns Wort. There are definitely side effects and, working on Serotonin, isn’t recommended for use with any Prozac like drug. With that said, the treatment of depression is a multidisciplinary approach. What worked for me might not work for the next person. I doubt that what worked for my depression would work for anyone, but I have found my own answer and it does include a combination of pharmaceutical antidepressants. But I have found that smoking lettuce opium and or taking a natural tranqualizer over the counter, that that can influence my feelings in a positive way as well. But I always say the same thing: talk to you doctor and don’t listen to anyone elses personal advice on what works. I hope this gives you a different perspective on the subject.
