Alternative Cures For Lower Back Pain?
About 15 years ago I damaged my coccyx, jumping off a flatbed builders lorry with a bag of cement in my hand. It got better, but every 18 months or so it nips up like it has now and i’m off work for a week.
You can see and feel swelling all across the lower line of my back just above where the coccyx joins the spine. More so on the right hand side than the left as you look at me from the back.
I’ve been to chiropractors and although they manage to ease it again, I’d like to explore holistic or alternative remedies for a more longer lasting cure. Anyone answering this must leave alternative contact details so I can talk to them further if necessary. 10 points goes to the most helpful!
try using a TENS machine it helps me when i have lower back pain. You can get them in pharmacies. They produce harmless electrical signals into the body through its pads. It relieves the pain by blocking the body’s pain signals and by stimulating the body’s production of endorphins. I hope that helps
I am afraid that overall managements of back pain are not as good as all that and none, give a permanent guarantee of relief. A few years ago a comparison study was done, looking at GP, orthopaedic, physio, chiropractic and osteopathic outcomes from back pain. There was in fact little difference between then, which actually suggests none of them work well!
It is important in the long term not to be overweight and to take regular appropriate exercise to strengthen the muscles of the back, which help to protect the spine.
i found if you get one of those electronic abs machines that pulses electric currents into the muscles and place it on the area this helps.-worth a try
Pilates, and sorry to say but it will get worse as you age
strengthen your lower back. Squats, dead lifts etc..It seems to work for me. I suffer with bad backs but not as often now.
It sounds like you might be ready for The Alexander Technique. This involves lessons, it’s not a therapy.
“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”
AT aims to teach you how to look after yourself, so that you will be able to avoid causing you back pain by yourself. In this way it’s rather different from methods that ‘fix’ the problem for the moment.
The first thing it teaches you is how you are using your body. Over time, your idea of what is normal gets out of whack. You can see people on the street who are in strange positions – the really tall man who is heavily stooped, or the old lady who is walking with her head parallel to the ground. These are extreme examples, but to them what they are doing seems normal. We all have less obvious habits that to us seem perfectly normal.
So an Alexander Technique teacher helps you identify what your body is really doing. Then in a lesson they’ll gently suggest, with their hands, a different way to stand, sit, move etc. The idea is to experience the way we used to be in natural balance as small children.
Then the tricky bit is to learn to notice when we’re about to make one of our habitual movements, and to avoid doing so, breaking the habit.
Alexander Technique is not quite so ‘alternative’ any more, as recent research seems to demonstrate its effectiveness in reducing chronic back pain (British Medical Journal):http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract/…
It found average days of pain reduced from 24 to 3 days.

The website below has a summary of the evidence based medicine for both mainstream and alternative treatments.
After a riding accident I have lower back pain, especially when I have to sit for a long time – like on this computer!! (Just taken 5 minutes from doing a translation job)
I have a cushion filled with cherry stones. This is put in the microwave for about 1.5 minutes and wrapped in a tea towel. I then place this behind me and the warmth really does ease the pain.
I also find that hanging from my arms from a door frame helps by stretching the spine.
I am going to try magnet field therapy. My friend has a magnet blanket and swears by this – so I will report back when I have tried it.
I really hope you find relief – there is nothing more painful than a back that’s “out”
Hi
i damaged my coccyx when i was 16 years old jumping off a trampoline and fell on to concrete landing on my back! i couldn’t move and was in Extreme pain which i had to be taken to hospital i ended up having an exam which found i had slightly “chipped the bone” of my coccyx. I ended up being bed bown for at least 2 weeks!
I still have mild discomfort now and again which isn’t nice!
I don’t know if you have tried creams and lotions but non of them worked for me except Tiger muscle rub its great but not cheap!!
mind you if your in discomfort you will pay anything within reason!
its feel like the other creams they have a burning sensation but the tiger muscle rub helps when putting it on my coccyx it takes the pain away completely
if you would like more info or a chat then email me its on my profile!
hope that helps
